What's been happening?

Thanks for visiting! The STEAM Lab has been a work in progress, developing under Katie Monsma, Assistant Director of After School. Our After School Explorers have been busy helping to create the STEAM Lab and test out projects, logisitics, and space functionality.

So far this '17-'18 school year, some of the favorite things we've done:

  • created a wish list based on a budget (and are slowly working on acquiring our learning materials)
  • made DIY microscopes out of cardboard and tiny acrylic spheres, inspired by Foldscope
  • played with conductive playdough
  • had a visit from the Coast Guard and learned about how they clean up hazardous waste
  • learned how to code using the Scratch program
  • played with Ozobots
  • built things with K'nex
  • taken things apart, such as a clock and headphones
  • learned about biomimicry and design thinking
  • constructed a cardboard marble maze

Some planned upcoming projects include:

  • using origami to learn math principles in a new way
  • making a cardboard arcade game
  • learning how to use a 3D design program
  • exploring circuits and electricity
  • making infographics

Stay tuned for student perspectives on projects!
